South Mountains State Park Backpack Camping

South Mountains State Park, features 20 backpack camping sites, which
are located in 6 areas of the park. Each camping area offers a pit toilet
nearby. All supplies, including water must be packed into the sites.
Campsites and distance from Jacob Fork parking area:
- Upper Falls Trail - 1.4 miles
- Shinny Creek - 1.2 miles
- Sawtooth Trail - 2.5 miles
- Jacob Branch - 3.8 miles
- Fox Trail - 4.9 miles
- Murray Branch - 5.4 miles

Group camping facilities are available in some backpack areas, and are
available for reservations by groups.
South Mountains State Park is located 20.5 miles south of Morganton
North Carolina and may be reached from I-40, turn south onto NC 18 and
travel 9 miles to NC 1913 (Sugarloaf Road) and turn right. Continue
along Sugarloaf Road to Old NC 18 and turn left. Travel 4 miles along
Old NC 18 and turn right onto Ward's Gap Road (SR 1901). South Mountains
State Park is located off SR 1901 on SR 1904.
