Stoner Mesa Trail #624

Located within the Dolores Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 17.5 mile Stoner Mesa Trail is rated
moderate/difficult and has a starting elevation of 7,560' (Lower Stoner
Trailhead) and an ending elevation of 11,650' (Calico Trail).
The Stoner Mesa Trail starts across the West Fork of th
Dolores River from the Lower Stoner Trailhead on the West Fork Road (FDR
535), about 3 miles from the Highway 145 turnoff. Stoner Mesa Trail climbs
the mesa side and tops out at 8,700' within the first 2 miles, then climbs
steadily northeast for 10 miles where it meets the Twin Springs Trail #739
at Twin Springs.

You may, at this point choose to go over the top of the
mountain on the Stoner Mesa Trail, or you can skirt the mountain to the
east and join the Stoner Creek Trail. Stoner Mesa Trail continues 2.5
miles over the mountain and back to the valley. From the valley it's a
steep climb for almost 3 miles to an elevation of 11,600' where you circle
12,113' Eagle Peak and arrive at the Calico Trail #641 crossing between
Eagle Peak and Calico Peak.
