White River National Forest
Available for both hiking, 4WD and mountain
biking, the 10.1 mile Mill Creek Road (FS 710) travels through the
Vail Ski Area. It is recommended that you reset your odometer at Mill
Creek Road. Turn left at 0.2 miles. Mill Creek Road is easy and passable
by any vehicle for the first 7 miles or so, after which the road becomes
narrow, rutted and often muddy. Climbing to the top of Red Peak (also
known as Benchmark) at 10.1 miles, views are unobstructed in every
directions. Mount of the Holy Cross, Battle
Mountain, Gore Range and the back bowls of Vail Mountain looking into Two
Elk Creek drainage can be seen. To reach Mill Creek Road travel along I-70 to exit 176. Travel south
through the roundabout on south side of freeway onto Vail Road. Within 0.5
mile the road curves to the left and enters a parking area behind the
Lodge Tower. Continue east under chair lift to intersection by Vista Bahn
Express Lift. Turn right uphill on Mill Creek Road.
