Bighorn Creek Trail #2013

Available for both hiking and horseback
riding, 3.25 mile Bighorn Creek Trail climbs steeply out of the Vail
Valley for the first 0.5 mile, then more gradually through stands of aspen
and pine. Bighorn Creek Trail continues on to pass beaver ponds, remains
of old mining camps and Bighorn Falls. Near mile 2, great views of
Vail and Bighorn drainage are available. Around mile 3 the trail passes
through open meadows and stands of sub-alpine fire and Englemann spruce,
offering a chance to see the Grand Traverse, a continuous 12,000' ridge
connection all the peaks and high drainages of the Gore Range. Bighorn
Creek Trail end at an old homestead cabin which is located on private
property and unlocked to offer shelter for hikers.To reach
Bighorn Creek Trail from
Vail Colorado, travel east along I-70 to exit 180 and turn right onto the
south frontage road. Continue along this road for about a mile and turn left
onto Columbine Drive. Travel along Columbine Drive to the end of the
pavement as the road passes under the interstate through a narrow passage.
There is limited parking at the end of the road.
