Half Moon Pass Trail #2009
|
White River National Forest
Available for both hiking and horseback
riding, 3.4 mile Half Moon Pass Trail is a moderately steep climb from the
parking area to Half Moon Pass crossing above the timberline after the
first mile. On the west side of Half Moon Pass, the trail descends with
some steep sections to Cross Creek. The maintained trail continues another
0.75 miles. For those wishing to climb Mt. of the Holy Cross, continue
past the end of the maintained trail following a fairly evident path up
the northern ridge of the mountain through boulders. Although the path is
periodically marked with cairns, topographic map and compass are strongly
recommended.
To reach Half Moon Pass Trail from
Vail Colorado travel along I-70 to exit 171 for Minturn, Leadville, and
Highway 24. Turn right onto Highway 24 and travel south about 5 miles,
passing through Minturn Colorado to Tigiwon Road #707 (on right before
crossing the bridge over Eagle River). Turn right onto Tigiwon Road (dirt)
and continue 8 miles to the parking area at the end of the road.
