Eagle County Colorado Hiking Trails
|
White River National Forest
Available for hiking & horseback riding, the
4.25 mile Squaw Creek Trail begins with a steep climb through wildflowers
and aspens, but becomes more gradual as it passes ranch property below and
to the left of the trail. Crossing Squaw Creek, the trail follows an old
road up the drainage to Elk Park, which is a large open meadow. After
passing the meadow, cross the creek and look for the trail leaving the
road to the right. Squaw Creek Trail intersects with FR 421, then descends
through a grass area. Crossing a rocky drainage, the trail becomes
difficult to fine. Continue along the drainage down until an open meadow
called Elbow Park is reached. The trail ends here at it's junction with
Salt Creek Trail.
To reach Squaw Creek Trail from
Eagle Colorado, travel east along I-70 for 9.8 miles to the Wolcott exit and
turn left, then right onto Highway 6. Continue east along Highway 6 for 3.3
miles to Squaw Creek Road and turn right. Travel along Squaw Creek Road for
3.2 miles and at the hairpin turn to the right, follow the road straight
where it becomes dirt. Continue along the dirt road for 1.2 miles to the
trailhead.
