the 7.28 mile Sweetwater Trail is fairly level as it follows the north rim
of Sweetwater Canyon. Beginning as a slight uphill through scrub oak &
sagebrush, Sweetwater Trail then enters aspen interspersed with grassy
meadows at about 2 miles. Descending at 3 miles to cross Sweetwater Creek,
the trail then climbs up through aspen & fir and large meadows before
leveling out and crossing a south facing slope. The next 2 miles continues
through aspen/fir before reaching some beaver ponds at the head of Dry
Sweetwater Creek before ending at Indian Camp Pass where it connects with
Trappers Lake Trail and Coffee Pot Road (FR 600).
To reach Sweetwater Trail from
Eagle Colorado, travel west along I-70 for 13 miles to Dotsero exit and
follow signs for Sweetwater/Burns by turning north onto Colorado River Road.
Continue along Colorado River Road for 7 miles to Sweetwater Creek Road and
turn left. Travel along Sweetwater Creek Road for 11.5 miles to the
Sweetwater Wilderness Ranch cabins where parking is available. The trailhead
is located another 0.25 miles up a 4WD road which leads to Hilltop Ranch
where there is additional parking. Go through the gate and travel on Turret
Creek Trail for 0.25 mile to the junction with Sweetwater Trail.
