White River National Forest
Available for both hiking, biking and horseback
riding, 11 mile Two Elk Trail is a designated National Scenic Trail. From
the east trailhead, follow the Old Vail Pass Road, now the Vail Pass
Recreation Trail 1.8 miles to the junction with the true Two Elk Trailhead
on the right. The trail drops from the recreation path to a bridge
crossing Black Gore Creek, then passes under I-70 into Timber Creek
Canyon. At mile 2.6 Two Elk Trail makes a sharp right across a third
bridge and begins it's steepest climb during the next 1.5 miles as it
travels to Two Elk Pass summit. From Two Elk Pass views of Gore Range,
Sawatch Range, and Vail's Back Bowls are available before Two Elk Trail
begins it's descend through meadows and the valley between Vail's Back
Bowls and Blue Sky Basin Bowls.
Two access points
are available for Two Elk Trail from Vail Colorado.

East Trailhead: Traveling east along I-70 to exit 180
for East Vail, turn right and continue 2.3 miles east along the south
frontage road. Traveling under the interstate and past
Gore Creek Campground, park just beyond at the road closure gate
and travel 1.8 miles up Old Vail Pass Road.

West Trailhead: Travel west along I-70 to exit 171 for
Minturn, Leadville, and Highway 24. Turn right and travel south 2.7
miles into Minturn Colorado to Cemetery Bridge. Turn left, cross the
bridge and tracks, then travel south past the cemetery. Turn right at
the first fork and left at the second fork. Continue 1.8 miles and
park at the trailhead at the end.
