Upper Piney River Trail #1885
|
White River National Forest
Available for both hiking & horseback
riding, the lower part of the 6.68 mile Upper Piney River Trail is one of
the most popular trails for the first 6 miles, with the waterfall
at mile 2.5 as a popular destination. Upper Piney River Trail provides
access to Mt. Powell (13,534') and the entire length of Piney river. Beyond
mile 5.5, fewer people and horses use the trail.
From the trailhead Upper Piney River Trail
climbs gradually for 2.5 miles to the cascading waterfall and
becomes less distinct after the falls. Continuing
along the north side of the river, the trail travels from aspen
groves to spruce and fir stands during the first 4 miles.
Crossing the river several times the trail reaches a small lake
at 5.5 miles. The last 1.2 miles to Upper Piney Lake becomes
more rigorous and the last 1.2 miles may be difficult to follow.
To reach Upper Piney River Trail from I-70, take
exit 176 for Vail and travel west along North Frontage Road to
Red Sandstone Road. Turn onto Red Sandstone Road and follow
about 2.5 miles to a fork with a dirt road on left. There should
be a Forest Service sign indicating Red Sandstone Road #700.
Continue up this road about 9 miles to Piney Lake. There is
Forest Service parking on the right before the entrance to Piney
River Ranch (private property).
