White River National Forest
Available for hiking & horseback riding, the
4.6 mile Wagonwheel Trail travels in a northwesterly direction through
open meadow with spruce and fir to Wagonwheel Creek. After crossing the
creek Wagonwheel Trail follows the creek down into a meadow. Ending at
Budges Resort, Wagonwheel Trail offers views of Wagonwheel Creek and
Shingle Peak.
To reach Wagonwheel Trail from Eagle
Colorado, travel west along I-70 for 13 miles to the Dotsero exit and
follow the signs for Sweetwater/Burns by turning north onto Colorado River
Road. Continue along Colorado River Road
for 1.75 miles and turn left onto Coffee Pot Road (FR 600). Travel 27 miles
along FR 600 to FR 601 and turn left towards Heart Lake. Continue along FR
601 for 1.5 miles and take the right fork onto FR 640. From this point FR
640 is 4WD only. Continue along FR 640 for 2 miles to Wagonwheel Road (FR
645) and turn right. Travel 1.5 miles along FR 645, cross a creek and turn
right onto Dry Buck Loop (FR 644). Stay to the left of the loop and the
trailhead is 0.2 miles on the left at the unmarked jeep road.
