Closed for elk calving from May 15 - June 20, the 9.8 mile
Government Trail is also known as Brush Creek Trail and is a popular
cross country ski trail during the winter. An enjoyable day hike or
mountain bike ride, Government Trail crosses Maroon Creek via a
pedestrian bridge and turns left onto a residential street. Leaving the
road the trail begins a steep ascent with switchbacks until reaching
Buttermilk Ski Area. |

Alternating
between aspen groves and ski runs, the trail climbs slowly after leaving the
ski area, passing through aspen, lodgepole pine and flowered meadows. Ending
at Snowmass Ski area, Government Trail is not a loop, car shuttle is
recommended. To access Government Trail from Aspen Colorado,
travel west 0.5 along Highway 82 to the Roundabout. Travel around the
roundabout and turn right onto Maroon Creek Road and continue 1 mile to the
Recreation Center. The trail begins behind the baseball fields. Cross the
pedestrian bridge and follow the signs for Government Trail. |
