Grizzly Helena Trail #1126
Pitchpine Trailhead to Lone Pine Trailhead
|
Routt National Forest
Available for motorcycles, hiking, biking
and horseback riding, the 7 mile Grizzly Helena Trail provides
primary access to Lost Ranger Trail. This section of the
Grizzly Helena Trail, which covers 30 miles total parallels the Mt. Zirkel
Wilderness boundary, travels north from the Pitchpine Trailhead. Leaving
the open sagebrush covered hillside, Grizzly Helena Trail enters lodgepole
pine forest and descends to Sunday Creek meadows through aspens before
traveling along the Roaring Fork. After fording the Roaring Fork to the
forest boundary Grizzly Helena Trail intersects with Lost Ranger Trail at
the mouth of Red Canyon. |
|
Continuing
northward, the trail eventually reaches Red Canyon North Rim 4WD Road which
serves as the trail for about 0.25 mile to the west where Grizzly Helena
Trail branches off towards Hell Creek. Traveling on to cross Lone Pine Creek
and up to Lone Pine Creek Road. Although suitable for horse
use, feeding areas are sparse along this section of Grizzly Helena Trail.
This section of Grizzly Helena Trail offers 2 access points:
-
Travel along CR 12W from Highway 125-14 near Walden
Colorado to CR 18. At the T on CR 18 turn right onto CR 5. Continue
along CR 5 to CR 20 and turn left. Travel along CR 20 to the forest
boundary to Pitchpine Trailhead on the left just after the
cattleguard, in an open meadow.
-

Walden to CR 16, which travels through Lone Pine Ranch. Follow this
road to the forest boundary and continue west along FR 640 about a
