The first 0.5 mile of Buchanan Pass Trail is day-use only. The next
3 miles are open to dispersed camping. At Middle Saint Vrain 4WD
Trailhead, the Buchanan Pass Trail picks up the old road which follows
the creek on a gentle uphill grade. At the Indian Peaks Wilderness,
Buchanan Pass Trail intersects with Saint Vrain Mountain Trail which
travels uphill to the northeast. Continuing up-valley for 0.9 miles,
Buchanan Pass Trail intersects with Saint Vrain Glacier Trail, after
which the trail crosses the creek on a narrow bridge and hooks to the
south, heading down-valley on an old pack trail that ascends the slope
for 1.1 miles to the 0.6 mile spur trail to Red Deer Lake. Another 0.8
miles past the Red Deer spur trail, after crossing into the next valley,
Buchanan Pass Trail meets the Beaver Creek Trail 1.6 miles west of the
Coney Flats Trailhead. From there, the Buchanan Pass Trail climbs more
steeply west to Buchanan Pass at the Continental Divide. Buchanan Pass
Trailhead is located at the west end of
Camp Dick Campground.
