Bears Ears Trail #1144

Routt National Forest

Available for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, the 44 mile Bears Ears Trail forms a large loop around the Black Mountain area. A few short sections of the trail are steep.

Dispersed camping is allowed 100' from the trail, bodies of water and 0.25 mile from a developed campground or trailhead.

Several access point are available for Bears Ears Trail including Forest Roads 110, 150, 118, 109 and 112. Three primary access points to sections of the trail are also available.

1. Black Mountain: Travel north along Highway 13 from Craig Colorado to Moffat County Road #27 and turn right. Continue along CR 27 to the Routt National Forest Boundary. Continue north along FR 110 for about a mile until Bears Ears Trail crosses the road.
2. Freeman Recreation Area offers easy access to Bears Ears Trail. To reach Freeman Recreation Area travel along U.S. Highway 13 north for 12 miles (pat Black Mountain Access) to Moffatt County Road 11/FR 112 and turn right. Continue for about 8 miles past the Sherman Youth Camp entrance to the Recreation area.
3. California Park: Travel along Routt County Road #80 out of Hayden Colorado and turn at the intersection onto CR70 and continue to the Forest Boundary at the top of Quaker Mountain.
