North Fork Elkhead Trail #1146

Routt National Forest

Available for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, the 44 mile North Fork Elkhead Trail travels north-northeast along Elkhead Creek and receives low use during the summer months. North Fork Elkhead Trail may be combined with Bears Ears and Sawmill Creek trails to form a 13 mile loop.

There are good unimproved camping sites along the North Fork of the Elkhead Creek.

1. From Craig Colorado turn north onto Highway 13 and continue about 8 miles to CR 18. Turn east onto CR 18 and travel 8 miles and turn north onto CR 76. Travel 3 miles along CR 76 and turn left onto FR 123. Continue along this 4WD road for 3 miles to the trailhead.
2. From Hayden Colorado, travel 25 miles along Highway 40 and turn north onto CR 76. Continue along CR 76 for 14 miles and turn left onto FR 123 (4WD). Travel about 3 miles along FR 123 to the trailhead.
