Animas River Drainage
Located within the Columbine Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 3.0 mile Purgatory Trail is rated
moderate and receives heavy use. Purgatory Trail begins and at an
elevation of 8,700' (Trailhead parking lot Directly across from Durango
Mountain Resort) and an ending elevation of 7,700' (Where Purgatory Flats
Trail meets the Animas River).
Purgatory Trail travels straight down on switchbacks
through forest and opens up in the Purgatory Flats area on Cascade Creek.
Depending on the time of year, Purgatory Creek may have to be forded.
