Animas River Drainage
Located within the Columbine Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 6.0 mile Salt Creek Trail is rated most
difficult and receives light use. Salt Creek Trail begins and at an
elevation of 10,800' (Highline) and an ending elevation of 8,200'
(Junction with Hermosa Creek).
By starting Salt Creek Trail from the Highline (Colorado
Trail), the hiker enjoys an all downhill trail (over 2,000' drop). The
last few miles are along the creek, after crossing the creek Salt Creek
Trail merges with the Hermosa Creek Trail.

To reach Salt Creek Trail travel 28 miles north of
Durango along US 550 to Durango Mountain Resort, turn west and
travel along Hermosa Park Road 10.5 miles to the junction with Hotel
Draw Road. Turn west onto Hotel Draw Road and continue about 5 miles
to the junction with Scotch Creek Road. Directly after this Y is a
gate with the Colorado Trail leading south. Follow the Colorado
Trail about 6 miles to the Salt Creek Trailhead.
The bottom of Salt Creek Trail may be accessed via
the Hermosa Creek Trail.
