Located within the Dolores Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 9.25 mile Morrison Trail rated moderate
and has a starting elevation of 7,960' (Highway 145, Bear Creek) and an
ending elevation of 8,900' (Transfer).
Morrison Trail is reached via the Bear Creek Trail, from
Dolores travel east 22 miles along Highway 145. The trailhead is clearly
marked on the highway, and begins about 0.25 miles east (upstream) fro the
confluence of Bear Creek & the Dolores River.

Starting about 0.25 miles after hiking the Bear Creek
Trail, Morrison Trail climbs out of the Dolores River valley and tops the
Haycamp Mesa in 2.25 miles at an elevation of 9,785'. Morrison Trail then
crosses Rock Springs Road (FDR 556) and descends into Lost Canyon where it
crosses Lost Canyon Road (FDR 560). Climbing out of Lost Canyon, Morrison
Trail gradually drops down in the Chicken Creek drainage and meets up with
Chicken Creek Trail. At this point you
may either turn left (east) and climb out of Chicken Creek to Transfer, or
continue down the Chicken Creek Trail.
