Sunnyside Trail #1987

Available for hiking & biking, the 10
Sunnyside Trail is not recommended for horse use and starts by climbing up
Red Mountain. In a little less than 2 miles the trail enters the aspen
groves and climbs steeply traveling pass a radio facility on the right.
Shortly after this Shadyside Trail enters on the left. Continuing along
Sunnyside Trail which travels east contouring Red Mountain a second sign
for Shadyside Trail will appear on the left in about a mile. Stay right to
remain on Sunnyside Trail. Another 1.5 miles brings Sunnyside Trail to an
intersection with a 4WD road. |

Follow the road to a sign marking
Sunnyside Trail off to the right. Sunnyside Trail becomes a single track at
this point and descends towards Hunter Creek. Again intersected by another
4WD road, the left fork of this road goes to Van Horn Park. To descend into
Hunter Creek Valley pick up the single track of
Hunter Creek Trail
on the other side. There is a junction at the bottom of the trail, turn
right and continue about 1/8 mile to the Tenth Mountain Bridge, Cross the
bridge and travel right, following the single track through the meadow. The
trail descends steeply through the trees and crosses Benedict Bridge. Take
an immediate left just after the bridge. The trail follows Hunter Creek
crossing over the creek several times. The last section is mostly boardwalk
and ascends steps ending behind Hunter Creek Condominiums.
To access Sunnyside Trail from Aspen Colorado travel west along Highway
82 for 0.25 mile to Cemetery Lane stoplight, turn right, cross the bridge
and turn left onto McLain Flats Road. A small parking area is located on
the left while the trail begins on the right. A bus may also be taken from
town to the last stop on Cemetery Land and walk uphill 0.5 mile to the
trailhead. |
