Pitkin County Colorado Hiking Trails
West Maroon Trail #1970
|
White River National Forest
Offering magnificent views of the Maroon Bells/Snowmass
Wilderness Area, the heavily used, 6.5 mile West Maroon Trail starts at
the Maroon Lake parking area traveling through a meadow to the far end of
the Lake and a Forest Service bulletin board. The Maroon-Snowmass Trail is
to the right. West Maroon Trail travels to the left and skirts the right
side of Crater Lake. After the lake the trail follows the stream for
short distance, then enters the forest. After emerging from the forest the
trail crosses a rocky scree field. |
|
The 1st stream crossing is in a
little over 3 miles. The trail on the other side is not always visible
before crossing. Climbing through forest and willow the trail reaches
another crossing in an open area, after which the trail angles to the right
and climbs steadily through willow and then tundra. The trail continues own
to the top of the pass. From the top of the pass the trail descends on the
other side to the East Fork Creek Trail and Schofield Park into Crested
Butte or Frigid Air Pass. |
