Available for hiking and horseback
riding, the 9.7 mile Sand Creek Trail begins adjacent to Sheriff
Reservoir on the east end of the dam. Traveling southeast, Sand Creek
Trail ascends about 200' in elevation arriving at a series of lakes at
mile 0.8. After crossing the creek for the 2nd time, Sand Creek Trail
continues on to cross a gully at mile 3 and emerges the forest onto an
alpine meadow which may be boggy. Sawtooth Trail is reached at mile 4.4. |

Sand Creek Trail offers 2 access points:
- Follow CR 17 north from Yampa Colorado for 5 miles to CR 132.
Continue along CR132 for 3.4 miles to Forest Highway 16. Travel 6
miles along 16 to Sheriff Reservoir Road 959. Follow 959 south for 2.6
miles to the trailhead parking at Sheriff Reservoir.
- Follow CR 7 west from Yampa to FR 900 (6.4 miles). Continue 4.2
miles along FR900 to FR906. Continue 1.2 miles along FR906 to the
trailhead.
