Sand Mountain Trail #1175

Routt National Forest

Available for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, the 1 mile Sand Mountain Trail travels to the summit of Sand Mountain where spectacular 360º view of Yampa Valley and surrounding mountain ranges, which sometimes extends as far as Utah and Wyoming.

To reach Sand Mountain Trail from the west end of Steamboat, travel north at the intersection of US 40 & CR 129 (Clark turnoff). Travel north for about 26 miles to just past the Steamboat Lake Headquarters and turn left onto CR62. Continue about 3 miles along CR 62 to FR 42. Continue along this road for about 5 miles and turn left onto FR 480, then fork onto FR 480A. Travel about 0.5 miles to the trailhead.
