When lava flowed through this ohia forest in a 1790
eruption, the trees were turned to ash. When the lava cooled, molds of the
burned tree trunks were left. The 17.1 acre Lava Tree State Monument
preserves this site. Services include picnic tables, restrooms and
Lava Trees Loop Trail.
Lava Tree State Monument is located in
Hawaii County Hawaii
off Pahoa-Pohoiki Road (Highway 132), 2.7 miles southeast of Pahoa.
