With an elevation gain of 3,240', the 10.5 mile Humuula Trail is rated difficult as it travels to the old Civilian Conservation Corps camp and Ranger station at Keanakolu.

To reach Humuula Trail from Hakalau, a partially paved 4WD road leads from Highway 11 at the 30 mile post in Ookala. Follow road 2.7 miles to the Hilo Forest Reserve boundary to the Humuula Trail.
