Gathland State Park
|
Located about an hour drive from Washington DC in Western Maryland along
the
Frederick
and
Washington
County lines, Gathland State Park was once home to Civil War journalist
George Alfred Townsend who wrote under the pen name "Gath". Gathland
State Park includes Crampton's Gap, the location of one of the first
battles of the Maryland Campaign during the American Civil War.
Featuring Civil War re-enactors, Gathland State Park also offers a
unique collection of buildings and a large, stone monument dedicated to
war correspondents. The Appalachian Trail transverses the park and
passes by the monument base.
