The Rocky Run ATV-ORV Trail

George Washington and Jefferson National Forests

Length: 10.0 miles

Rating: Easy-Difficult

The Rocky Run ATV/OHV Trail on the Dry River District is a loop of approximately 10 miles designed for the recreational, all-terrain vehicle rider. Riders will find challenges in the narrow and twisting portion connecting Second Mountain and Dictum Ridge, while others will find trails that are wide and inviting.

The current route is approximately 10 miles long. Trails accommodate a variety of abilities. Levels vary from easiest, which is suitable for the novice, to most difficult, which challenges the most experienced rider.
Designated trails are marked by orange diamonds with a mountain symbol. Camping is permitted along the trail, except for within 500 feet around the trailhead parking lot. Due to space limitations in the trailhead parking lot, trailers should not exceed 16 feet in length. Be aware of two-way traffic, including 4-wheel drive trucks, and keep speeds manageable to your riding skill level.

Unlicensed all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), motorbikes and mountain bikes are permitted only on the designated trails within the Rocky Run area. Four-wheel drive trucks are also allowed on designated portions of the trail. These designated trails are off-limits for saddle, pack, and draft animals. All motor-vehicles are to have operable brakes, muffler, and spark arrester. All ATV operators must wear a protective helmet. Operators sixteen years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Only one rider/operator on a vehicle at a time.
Directions:

Travel west from Harrisonburg, VA, on Rt. 33 for approximately 10 miles. Turn right on Rt. 612 for approximately 4.5 miles. Turn left onto Forest Development Road (FDR) 72 at Gospel Hill Church. Follow FDR 72 for 5-6 miles and turn left on the trailhead access road for about one mile. Users should be aware that FDR 72 is a single-lane road with limited turnouts, and is recommended for high clearance vehicles only.
