The Northwestern section of Alabama is the Home of Lawrence
County, which was founded in 1818 and named after Naval Captain
James Lawrence who was known for his battle cry, “Don’t give up
the ship” in the War of 1812. Lawrence County is only a short
drive from cities such as Huntsville, Birmingham, Nashville,
Memphis and Atlanta. Just North of Lawrence County you will find
the Tennessee River, go South and you will find the Bankhead
forest. Thus Lawrence County has numerous opportunities for
recreation.
Outdoor recreation opportunities include William B. Bankhead
National Forest, Animal House Zoological Park, The Oakville
Indian Mounds, Park And Museum, Joe Wheeler State Park And
Wheeler Dam, and The Jesse Owens Memorial Park And Run
