Available to both Hikers & Horseback riders, the 5 mile Stout Lakes
Trail provides access to Stout Lakes which sit above the timberline near
the top of the Sangre De Cristo range. Below the lakes the creek follows
waterfalls
& small, narrow canyons. Stout Lakes Trail is very steep in some areas and
is rated Difficult for hiking.

Stout Lakes Trail is accessed by
travel 16 miles east from Salida Colorado along Highway 50 (1.5 miles east
of Howard Colorado) to Kerr Gulch Road and turn south. Continue along Kerr
Gulch Road for 3.5 miles to a split in the road, take the right road and
continue 0.75 miles to an information kiosk at the top of a rocky meadow,
which is a good place to park. After walking up an old road (behind the
kiosk) about 0.75 miles to the Rainbow Trail, follow Rainbow Trail back to
the North for about 0.25 miles to reach the Stout Trailhead. |
