Pike & San Isabel National Forest, Cimarron & Comanche National
Grasslands, National Forest in Colorado
Available for hiking & horseback riding, the 5.0 mile Tunnel Lake Trail
travels along an old railroad grade to the east portal of the historic
Alpine tunnel. From where the trail ends at the caved-in entrance to the
tunnel, Tunnel Lake Trail travels up a steep hill for 0.75 miles to above
the timberline. Above the timberline Tunnel Lake Trail is marked with a
series of rock cairns. Tunnel Lake is visible by looking northeast from
the trail. Hikers can descend from the trail down to the lake.
Tunnel Lake Trail is very popular with photographers, as it offers some
of the most scenic views.
