Animas River Drainage
Located within the Columbine Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 5.5 mile Carter Creek Trail #623 is
rated more difficult and receives heavy use. Carter Lake Trail begins at
an elevation of 10,800' (Andrews Lake Trailhead) and an ending elevation
of 11,600' (Carter Lake).
Located in the basin at the bas of Twilight Peak, Carter
Lake Trail is an excellent long day hike or as an overnight trip. Also
accessible from Carter Lake Trail is Snowdon Peak. Twilight Peak and
Snowdon Peak both offers panoramic views including the Needles, the
Grenadiers and the distant town of Silverton.
