Animas River Drainage
Located within the Columbine Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest, the 25 mile Elwood Pass to Sawtooth Mountain
section of the Continental Divide Trail is rated Moderate to Difficult,
and receives Moderate use. This section of the Continental Divide Trail
begins at an elevation of 11,630' (Elwood Pass) and an ending elevation of
12,400' (Highline Trail near Sawtooth Mountain). With most of this section
of the trail at or above the timberline, snow may be present until late
June or July.

To reach the Elwood Pass to Sawtooth Mountain
section of the Continental divide Trail travel 25 miles west of Del
Norte Ranger Station along Highway 160 to Park Creek access road
#380. Turn left onto Park Creek road and continue for about 17 miles
to old Elwood Guard Station (cabin). The trail is located about 0.25
miles west of the cabin.
An additional access is available at Wolf Creek
Pass, 20 miles southwest of South Fork along U.S. 160.
