Pike & San Isabel National Forest, Cimarron & Comanche National
Grasslands, National Forest in Colorado
Available for hiking & horseback riding, the 3.2 mile Shelf Lake Trail begins
at the site of an old smelter, and for the first 0.5 miles climbs steeply into
the hanging valley below the cirque at the head of the Smelter Gulch drainage.
After the initial climb Shelf Lake Trail rises at a less rapid rate toward
timberline. A final steep climb in a series of switchbacks brings you onto the
shelf and to the lake. Shelf Lake Trail is rated more difficult.
