Middlesex County Connecticut
with some parcels in New
Haven County, the 16,000 acre Cockaponset State Forest is the 2nd
largest forest in Connecticut. Named after a Native American chief,
Cockaponset State Forest is disjointed and is comprised of land in the
towns of Haddam, Chester, Deep River, Killingworth, Durham, Guilford,
Madison, Clinton, Westbrook, Middletown and Middlefield.
Home to Pattaconk Lake, Cockaponset State Forest offers a large
variety of recreational opportunities including fishing, swimming,
paddling, horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, cross-country
skiing, hunting and youth group camping. |

To reach the Ranger Headquarters from the North, take exit 8 off Route 9
South and turn left onto Beaver Meadow Road. Continue along Beaver
Meadow Road to the 2nd right and turn onto Ranger Road.
To reach the Pattaconk Recreation Area from Middletown area, travel
south along Route 9, exit 6. Turn right off the exit ramp and travel
west along Route 148 for about 2 miles and turn right onto Cedar Lake
Road. Continue along Cedar Lake Road for 2 miles and turn left at the
Pattaconk Lake sign.
