Located within the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the 4.4 mile (round trip) Alum
Cave Trail is rated moderate and travels to Mt. LeConte. Alum
Cave Trail provides access to Arch Rock, Inspiration Point and
the Alum Cave Bluff. Arch Rock is a natural arch. Inspiration
Point offers great views of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon
River's upper basin. Alum Cave Bluff is the result of
Confederate mining of saltpeter during the Civil War.
To reach Alum Cave Trail from the Sugarlands Visitor Center,
travel east along Newfound Gap Road for 8.6 miles to the two
parking areas. A gravel path at the parking areas leads to The
Grassy Patch and the beginning of Alum Cave Bluff.
