Grayson,
Washington,
Wythe,
Carroll
and
Smyth County Virginia, the 150,000 acre Mount Rogers National
Recreation Area is home to all of Virginia's over 5,000' elevations.
With elevation ranging from 2,000' at the New River to 5,729' on
Virginia's highest point, Mount Rogers, Mount Rogers NRA is part of the
Jefferson National Forest, and one of the largest public recreational
areas in the East.
With over 400 miles of trails ranging from primitive single-track
to old logging road and railroad grades, more than 100 miles of trout
streams, 2 small lakes, and several campgrounds, Mount Rogers National
Recreation Area is one of the premier hiking locations in the
Appalachian Mountains. |

Mount Rogers National Recreation Area consists of 3 regions:
West End
Located near Damascus Virginia, the West End is offers great trout
fishing, scenic Beartree Lake, the Virginia Creeper Trail and Mount
Rogers NRA's largest campground, Beartree.
East End
The East End of Mount Rogers NRA is home to Comers Rock and Raven
Cliff Campgrounds, as well as Hussy Mountain and Collins Cove Horse
Camps. In addition to the campgrounds, the East End also offers several
horse trails, including the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, Comers Rock
Overlook, Raven Cliff Furnace Trail and 2 rental cabins.
High Country
Containing over 25,000 acres of the highest lands in Virginia, the
High Country is the heart of Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, and
contains the following areas:
- Lewis Fork Wilderness & Little Wilson Creek Wilderness, which
combined hold around 10,000 acres of primitive backcountry.
- Crest Zone, which consists of the open areas on Brier Ridge, Cabin
Ridge, Wilburn Ridge, Stone Mountain, and Pine Mountain. Totaling
around 2,000 acres, the Crest Zone offers spectacular views, rocky
ridges and grassy areas.
