August 2007
In August we traveled to Dahlonega, Georgia for our review of
Cavender Creek Cabins armed with directions from their
website. Cavender Creek Cabins appears to be very isolated,
yet it is only a few minutes (10 or less) from downtown
Dahlonega. We stayed in Cabin #4, a 2 bedroom with queen beds,
an open loft with 2 twin beds, a queen sized sleeper sofa,
full kitchen, one bath cabin which sits in the woods (as do
all of the cabins). Cavender Creek Cabins' web site states
that this cabin sleeps 6 which it easily could, but the
sleeper sofa would actually allow for 8 overnight guest.
Cabin #4 was nicely decorated and very comfortable,
however I had a difficult time staying off the back porch. The back
porch faces Cavender Creek, but mostly what you see is the trees and
birds. Also located on the back porch is a gas BBQ grill and the hot
tub. The hot tub received a lot of use from my wife & her mother. I just
liked sitting on the porch swing doing nothing. I left my laptop at home
to force myself to relax. The swing & chairs on the porch were made of
wood and very comfortable.
Inside our cabin we did watch some tv one night, and
the satellite connection enabled us to watch our normal shows. A DVD
player & VCR were also available in the cabin which we probably would
have used if the weather had turned rainy. As it turned out our two
nights at Cavender Creek Cabins were met with clear skies, however it
was hot outside, I did mention that we went in August. The gas fireplace
looked very nice, but we had to save that for a fall or winter trip. The
air conditioner in the cabin was great.
We only used the refrigerator in our cabin (remember,
hot...August) but we could have cooked a full meal because everything
needed was there. Also available at Cavender Creek Cabins were hiking
trails, a lake and The Lodge. Located just down the road within an easy
walk was The Lodge, a large common recreational cabin available to all
guest. A pool table, chess, checkers and several other games were all
available at The Lodge as were washer & dryers.
As photographers, my wife & I have traveled a great
deal. We have stayed is really nice Hotels and some not so great motels.
As I sat on the porch swing one morning as the sun was about to come up
I thought about the various rooms we had stayed at in the past and about
the cabin we were at now and I wondered why we would ever stay in a
motel again if a cabin was available. Hotels are great if you are in a
big city and need to be near the "action", but if traveling to Dahlonega
or any other area where your goal is to get a way from your normal life,
to relax and to enjoy the mountains then a cabin is the way to go (or
stay).
