J. Oliver Photography
The images I create are from photographs taken at Civil War
Reenactments. I use a Nikon D3000 camera and shoot in both raw
and jpeg formats. This allows much more flexibility in post
processing. The images are then edited in Photoshop to give them
a vintage feel as if they were actually an 1860s photograph
(tintype). I feel that this better represents the time period
and really brings the civil war to life.

I would rather be behind a camera than in front of it. The
outdoors is my favorite studio. I take pictures of what I see
from close up to the wide world around me. Bugs and insects to
the colors of the flowers with a bit of sports thrown in, toys,
tools and nature are my subjects. You will also see my newest
art as digitally created. From kaleidoscopes (from my pictures),
out of frame (pictures changed to have a 3D effect) to pure
creations the computer is the art tool I will use. Hope you
enjoy my work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Having been "born an artist" I have been creating and selling my
work for about 35 years. I have tried just about every medium
out there. Pencils/graphite, pastels, oils, laquers and
automotive paints (motorcycle and monster truck painting) and
have found my favorite is Acrylics on canvas and hard boards. I
use the airbrush a LOT in my work because of its ability to
blend colors so smoothly and yet produce fine lines for hair and
fur. I specialize in wildlife close-ups and commissioned pet
portraits.

My background as a painter influences my digital art
giving my work a painterly quality. I especially enjoy
experimenting with different techniques to keep my work
and interest fresh. The natural world is my favorite
subject although not exclusively so. I also find the
realm of consciousness and science fascinating. I often
work with translucent layers to express the complexity
of the subject. Fractal patterns are a playful and
visually interesting subject.
