The Mountain Travel Guide visited
The Lost Mine of Murphy North Carolina on Tuesday (June 3, 2008).
Located at the Liquidation Station, 0.5 mile east of Wal-Mart (almost a
landmark here in Murphy), The Lost Mine of Murphy's website list a
"Guaranteed Jewelry Quality: stone in every bucket.
Living here in Murphy I had never really planned on visiting the "Lost
Mine", but a visit from my Mother from middle Georgia caused us to plan a
close to home outing. My wife & I along with our 3 year old daughter and
my mother each received a $15 bucket of dirt and were given instructions
and a demonstration of how to find the gems. Not really expecting to fine
anything in our buckets, we began to pan. |

Ok, I have to admit I was wrong on
so may levels. Not only did we fine a lot of gems, I really had fun. We all
did. Well, our 3 year old had more fun washing gravel from the walkway than
she did looking for rocks (after all there were plenty of rocks on the
walkway). We stayed there for almost 2 hours playing in our buckets of dirt,
and in the end we had 4 gems which we left with The Lost Mine's gem cutter
to have placed in rings (ready in about 2 weeks). I will try to add photos
of the cut stones after they are done. |
One of the reasons our time at the "Lost Mine" was so much fun was
because of our panning host/rock-ol-ogists, Zack. Zack was very helpful,
and entertaining. His knowledge of rocks and gems were great.
As stated on the Cherokee County North
Carolina
page of this site, Murphy North Carolina is a great "Home Base" offering a
variety of recreational opportunities within a short driving distance. The
Lost Mine of Murphy should definitely be added to your list of things to
do while in the area. I Will be returning to the Lost Mine to play
in the dirt again. |
